Knowledge is Power (Essay)
Bacon the great
essayist was not way wrong in his opinion when he said that “Knowledge is
source of power to man”. It is as true today as it was in the past. In fact it
is knowledge that distinguishes man from animals.
Man is
physically weaker than many animals. He can not see as for as an eagle; he can
not run as fast an panther his sense of smell is weaker than of dog. He can not
carry heavy loads as some beasts of burden do. He can not fight lions and tiger
with his bare hands. Yet he has managed to become the most powerful creature on
the earth. His power comes from knowledge not from physical strength.
Man has the
ability to acquire knowledge, preserve it and pass it on to the coming
generations. This has given him the power to control the forces of nature and
use them for his benefit. It is however necessary for mankind to use the
knowledge and power wisely, we can create a better and safer world than the
world today. Knowledge and power alone can not bring happiness to mankind. We
have not used our knowledge and power for benefits of entire mankind. Those
persons and nations who happened to possess knowledge and power in the past
used it for creating personal and national empires by conquering more lands and
enslaving more people.
Our knowledge
has not enabled us to banish war that destroyed man from very beginning. In
fact we have used immense knowledge acquired in the past two or three centuries
to make war more and more horrible. The last century has seen man reaching the
moon and exploring the deep space, had also seen two world wars in which
million of people were killed. These wars were started by nations who meet most
advanced nations in the field of knowledge and power.
Knowledge is no
doubt a power it has changed the surface of earth it has brought countless
happiness for man but is must be used in the right direction and for the welfare
of whole humanity. The knowledge that creates the articles for destruction of
man is not knowledge but a curse. But knowledge which opens the gates for human
happiness is in fact knowledge which should be acquired.
The frontiers of
knowledge are widening day by day and it’s rather difficult to determine the
explosion rate. We must keep pace with the changes occurring in different
fields of knowledge to survive the rigorous demands of the twenty first
century. Real power comes to nation through knowledge. Let us acquire that
power to raise the image of our dear homeland in the comity of nations.
